Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences is part of the Faculty of Sciences and was born by merging of the previous Institutes of Mineralogy-Petrography, Palaeontology-Geology, Geochemistry.
The department held courses for degrees in Geology, Natural Sciences and Environmental Sciences and is divided into 8 scientific sections with about 80 researchers and teachers.
The scientific sections perform research in the following areas: Geochemistry, Volcanology and geodynamic, Physical Geography and Geomorphology, Applied Geology and Hydrogeology, Dynamic Geology and Stratigraphy, Mineralogy and Crystallography, Palaeontology and Palaeoecology, Petrography and Georesources.
The Department is provided of several laboratories including those for radiometric dating, diffractometry, spectroscopy, grain-size analysis, electron microscopy, GIS and investigations under HT-HP conditions.

The department also carries out marine research by oceanographic survey in all Italian seas, in particular in order to find sediment for the artificial recovering in coastal erosion.

MAIN TASKS

Valuation of the coastal vulnerability in relation to storm events, flood hazard in the mouth river zones and beach erosion processes. The study is based on a comparison between a new morphological-sedimentological survey and a previous morphological-sedimentological situation. Moreover it takes in consideration historical trend of the shoreline shift and the climatic events.
